In a Tuesday tweet, progressive “squad” member Ayanna Pressley said California Governor Newsom “must prioritize this leadership, perspective & representation in the vacated U.S. Senate seat” and should elect a Black woman to replace Kamala Harris in the Senate.
Pressley then specifically suggested Barbara Lee or Karen Bass, noting they are “seasoned policymakers.”
Pressley was responding to a tweet from the organization “She the people” that stated “Our founder and president, @aimeeallison, joins other orgs as they urge CA Gov. Newsom to appoint a woman of color, specifically a Black woman, to fill VP-elect Harris’ U.S. Senate seat. Women of color need representation at the highest levels of office!”
We absolutely cannot go backwards. With the election of @KamalaHarris to VP-elect, @CAgovernor must prioritize this leadership, perspective & representation in the vacated U.S. Senate seat & appoint a Black woman. @BLeeForCongress & @KarenBassTweets are seasoned policymakers. https://t.co/0krXlbeh7s

Currently, the betting market of PredictIt gives Alex Padilla the highest odds of being chosen by Newsom.
