After being welcomed by Secretary of State Tony Blinken at President Joe Biden’s virtual climate summit, teen climate activist Xiye Bastida, who was born in Mexico, named “capitalism” among her list of “harmful systems” causing the climate crisis and declared “you need to accept that the era of fossil fuels is over.”
“The climate crisis is the result of those perpetuating and upholding the harmful systems of colonialism, oppression, capitalism, and market-oriented green-washed solutions,” Bastida said.
“We demand that you stop systematically targeting the global south, and black and brown and indigenous communities through environmental plunder, the exploitation of our lands…” she later added.
Bastida called the climate crisis the “biggest challenge humanity had faced” and called for a “just transition” away from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
“You need to accept that the era of fossil fuels is over,” she said.
