WATCH: MSNBC anchor asks NJ governor if he’ll punish Republicans who violated restrictions

MSNBC anchor Stephanie Ruhle asked Democrat NJ governor Phil Murphy if he would punish Republicans, including Rep. Matt Gaetz who held a gala in violation of state COVID-19 restrictions.

Ruhle said “the New York Young Republicans couldn’t hold the event in New York because the rules wouldn’t permit it, but they held the gala here in our state.” She continued “You called out Congressman Matt Gaetz… but here’s the thing – Matt Gaetz doesn’t care! He doesn’t care if you call him a putz, he doesn’t care that you don’t want him in New Jersey, he loves this national news!”

Ruhle then asked “but now those people who broke the rules could be spreading this virus and killing people across our state! You’re the one who makes the rules! Do you need to put more restrictions in place and actually punish these people?”

Friday, Governor Murphy tweeted “Last night, the @NYYRC allegedly snuck into Jersey City to hold a “gala fundraiser” – ignoring our social distancing and mask rules. It is beyond the pale that anyone would willingly endanger people in another state. Jersey City law enforcement is investigating this matter.”

He continued  “It is also beyond the pale that Rep Matt Putz – I mean @RepMattGaetz – would participate in this. What a fool. Matt – You are not welcome in New Jersey, and frankly I don’t ever want you back in this state,” he added.

Gaetz fired back at Murphy on the same day and wrote “You’re gonna regret this tweet when you move to Florida like the rest of New Jersey.”
