Video surfaces of Biden telling U.S. troops “Clap for that, you stupid bastards”

A new video has surfaced of 2020 candidate Joe Biden speaking in the UAE in March of 2016 where he calls U.S. troops in apparent jest “stupid bastards” and “a dull bunch.”

Biden says “Notwithstanding what you may hear about me, I have incredibly good judgment. One, I married Jill and two, I appointed Johnson to the academy. I just want you to know that.”

After a moment of silence, Biden continues “so clap for that you stupid bastards,” eliciting laughter from the crowd. “Man, you all are a dull bunch. It must be slow here, man,” Biden adds.

Some Twitter users compared Biden’s moment to Jeb’s infamous “Please clap” moment.

In a statement to the Daily Beast, Biden campaign spokesperson Andrew Bates said “Vice President Biden was jokingly encouraging the audience to clap for an airwoman on the stage, and a number of service members can be seen laughing and smiling at the comment. Seconds before, he praised them for ‘the incredible sacrifices [they] make for our country.”
