VIDEO: Kaepernick Attacks U.S. Govt for Stealing Indigenous People’s Land in Thanksgiving Speech

Activist quarterback Colin Kaepernick has once again set social media on fire, this time with his Thanksgiving tweet accusing the U.S. government of stealing 1.5 acres of land from Indigenous people.

Colin writes “Spent the morning at the Indigenous People’s Sunrise Ceremony on the 50 year anniversary of the Occupation of Alcatraz. The US government has stolen over 1.5 billion acres of land from Indigenous people. Thank you to my Indigenous family, I’m with you today and always”

In the video, Kaepernick says

It’s been 50 years since the occupation and that struggle has continued for that 50 years. Before that 50 years, it will continue from this point. It’s our responsibility to honor our ancestors and honor our elders by carrying on that struggle. Don’t let their sacrifices be in vain. That’s why it’s important for all of us to be here today, to show that we’re together, that we’re unified, that we have that solidarity. And I hope to spend many more of these with you.

The reaction was mixed.

Most countries were established that way. It also happened a very long time ago. People shouldn’t forget. But also people shouldn’t be punished for things that in today’s society isn’t the norm. Many countries were formed this way. Arabs conquered Egypt, Turks took Persia.

As a Native American I can say, no, it was not stolen. It was conquered. Same as with any land taken anywhere in the world. Including land that native Americans took from other native Americans.

Kaepernick also had supporters. Anne Brown wrote:

Maybe, just maybe, what Kaepernick is now doing is what he has been Ordered to do by his Higher Being. Perhaps he is done w/what he formerly did and is now on a Path to a larger, intended purpose. I believe he might be responding to a Call.

Mariah, whose avatar is Colin Kaepernick, wrote “We’re with you, today and always!”
