Rochester Mayor Removes Police Chief Over Prude’s Death, Calls for Investigation

Lovely Warren, the mayor of Rochester New York has relieved Rochester Police Chief La’Ron Singletary ahead of his planned retirement this month, citing a review into the death of Daniel Prude.

Warren is also suspending two others for 30 days without pay – the city attorney and her communications director.

During the Monday press conference, Warren said “we have a pervasive problem in the Rochester Police Department, one that views everything through the eyes of the badge. The culture of policing in Rochester must change.”

She continued “I have directed the deputy mayor to initiative an internal management review of the city handling of the mental hygiene arrest and subsequent death of Daniel Prude.”

Frankly, the public should have been informed of Mr. Prude’s death and the circumstances that led to his death in March, and after seeing the video, I should have conducted a formal review,” she added.

Warren has already suspended seven officers involved in Prude’s death with no pay.
