Ricky Gervais Fires Back at Critics Saying He Went Too Far and Was “Being Kind of a D*ck”

Ricky Gervais fired back at critics of his epic Golden Globes monologue that were offended.

Yahoo News published a piece saying he “went a little too far”

Slate wrote “Going into the Golden Globes, the biggest question was not who will win the night’s biggest awards but how much of a jerk Ricky Gervais would be. … On occasion, Gervais does genuinely speak truth to power, but much of the time he’s just, well, being kind of a dick.”

The LA Times wrote “Forget the escapist magic of Hollywood. Nihilism was the name of the game when host Ricky Gervais opened the Golden Globes on Sunday night with a gloom-and-doom monologue so cynical it made the effervescent Tom Hanks scowl. …”

Mark Harris of Vanity Fair wrote “Here’s my Ricky Gervais problem: The idea that celebrities are not only pampered babies but hypocrites who cause the problems they make speeches deploring and should therefore shut up and act/sing/be grateful is a right-wing talking point, and an especially stupid one.”

In response to his critics, Gervais tweeted:

Thanks for all your amazing comments about my Golden Globes monologue. Best reaction ever and that means a lot to me. I had a blast but thank fuck it’s over, so I can get back to my real job of editing and touring . Make Jokes, Not War

He also tweeted:

How the fuck can teasing huge corporations, and the richest, most privileged people in the world be considered right wing?

In case you missed it, here is Gervais’ full monologue.
