Progressive Dems vent after Dems’ landmark voting rights bill fails to pass Senate

Tuesday, squad members AOC, Omar and Tlaib reacted after Democrats landmark “For the People Act” voting rights bill failed to pass the Senate on a procedural vote.

50 Democrats voted for the bill but were joined by zero Republicans. 60 votes were needed in order for the bill to pass.

After the bill’s failure, Rep. Ilhan Omar tweeted “Our democracy is more important than the Senate filibuster. Pass it on.”

Rep. AOC tweeted “Call me radical, but I do not believe a minority of Senators should be able to block voting rights for millions of people. But I guess I’m just from that far-left school of thought that legislation should pass when a majority of legislators vote for it”

Rep. Ayanna Pressley tweeted “The people did not give Democrats the House, Senate and White House to compromise with insurrectionists. Abolish the filibuster so we can do the people’s work.”

Rep. Pramila Jayapal tweeted “First, voters delivered Democrats the House, the Senate, and the White House. Then, Republican legislators responded by doing everything they can to suppress the vote. Now, we need to stop them. End the filibuster, pass the For the People Act, and protect voting rights.”

While many Democrats are calling to abolish the filibuster, a major obstacle will be Democrat Senator Krysten Sinema, who just recently penned an Op-Ed in which she defended it and has been consistently opposed to efforts to eliminate it.

Sinema continues to defend the filibuster, a potential devastating blow for Biden’s agenda
