Progressive Dems fume after Manchin says he would not back court packing, eliminating filibuster

Progressive Democrats fumed after West Virginia Democrat Senator Joe Manchin appeared on Fox News and said he would not back packing the Supreme Court or ending the filibuster.

Manchin said “I commit to you tonight, and I commit to all of your viewers and everyone else that’s watching, I want to allay those fears, I want to rest those fears for you right now. Because when they talk about, whether it be packing the courts or ending the filibuster, I will not vote to do that. I will not vote to pack the courts. I think and I will not vote to end the filibuster.”

“I will not be the 50th Democrat voting to end that filibuster or to basically stack the court, and in all the other things you’re hearing about, Bret, also, defund the police,” he continued

“I don’t know of any of the Democrats in the caucus that are for defunding the police. We’re not for that whatsoever. And when they talk about basically, Medicare for all, we can’t even pay for Medicare for some. It doesn’t make any sense at all,” Manchin added.

Progressive “squad” member tweeted “Stop worrying about progressives, this might be the reason we don’t win the Senate races in Georgia. Good grief

Justice Democrats, the progressive PAC that helped elect AOC reacted with a simple vomiting emoji.

Peter Daou wrote “Manchin is not an aberration in the Democratic Party. He’s just more obviously a Republican than the rest of the Dem leadership.”

Sahil Kapur wrote “Best case scenario for Senate Democrats is to win both Georgia runoffs and capture 50 seats, which would make Manchin a swing vote. This is as clear a sign as any that the biggest ambitions of progressives are on ice for at least two years.”

Meanwhile, Republican Steve King liked what he heard from Mancin and wrote “Joe, You have delivered an excellent message for America to Brett Baier. Centrist Democrats can partner with R’s. Too bad there are so few of you.”
