California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, who Fox News reports is being considered for AG for the Biden administration, once said illegal immigration should be decriminalized, a far-left stance on the subject.
Speaking about illegal immigrants, Becerra said to the Huffington Post “They are not criminals.”
He added “they haven’t committed a crime against someone, and they are not acting violently or in a way that’s harmful to people. And I would argue they are not harming people indirectly either.”
Becerra suggested he wants entering the U.S. illegally to be a civil offense, not a criminal one.
“If you call them criminals, it’s a lot easier to get people to turn against them than if you call them undocumented immigrants,” he said.
Becerra also has warned of prosecution and possible fines of up to $10k for employers who helped ICE with California enforcement operations.
Becerra told the Sacramento Bee “It’s important, given these rumors that are out there, to let people know – more specifically today, employers – that if they voluntarily start giving up information about their employees or access to their employees in ways that contradict our new California laws, they subject themselves to actions by my office.”
“We will prosecute those who violate the law,” he added.
