A new Morning Consult poll shows the majority of U.S. voters think Democrats should replace Nancy Pelosi as their House Speaker.
Among all voters, 56 percent said Democrats should find a new leader.
53% of Democrats said the party should keep Pelosi as speaker compared to 33% who think she should be replaced.
In contrast, only 40% of all voters think Republicans should replace Kevin McCarthy.
During an interview with Jeremey Scahill of the Intercept, AOC suggested it’s time for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to go, but not until the leadership vacuum that would result can be filled.
“If you create that vacuum, there are so many nefarious forces at play to fill that vacuum with something even worse,” AOC explains.
AOC argues that right now there are no alternatives because Democrat party leadership has concentrated power without any “real grooming of a next generation of leadership.”
She says “a lot of this is not just about these two personalities, but also about the structural shifts that these two personalities have led in their time in leadership.”
“The structural shifts of power in the House, both in process and rule, to concentrate power in party leadership of both parties, frankly, but in Democratic Party leadership to such a degree that an individual member has far less power than they did 30, 40, 50 years ago,” she continues.
She says this pushes the “really talented members of Congress that do come along” to leave or run for statewide office instead.” She adds that Pelosi has also signaled that this could be her last time “and the left isn’t really making a plan for that either, so I do think that it’s something that we really need to think about.”
