Planned Parenthood Celebrates Biden admin plans to undo Trump “Protect Life” Abortion Rules

According to a new report from NPR “the Biden administration is moving to reverse a Trump-era family planning policy that critics describe as a domestic “gag rule” for reproductive healthcare providers.

Xavier Becerra, head of Biden’s Department of Health and Human Services and a planned parenthood ally announced Wednesday the plan tor reverse the Trump era Protect Life rule.

NPR explains “the proposal published on Wednesday would largely return the federal Title X family planning program to its status before Trump took office. The current rules, implemented in March 2019 under Trump, forbid any provider who provides or refers patients for abortions from receiving federal funding through Title X to cover services such as contraception and STD screenings for low-income people.”

Planned Parenthood reacted by tweeting:

GREAT NEWS! The Biden-Harris admin just proposed ending the Title X gag rule! This dangerous policy undermines the only federal program dedicated to providing sexual and reproductive health care to people with low incomes.

Ending this gag rule is HUGE! Why? The gag rule was designed to block access to @PPFA and other providers, creating barriers to reproductive health care, especially for those facing systemic barriers: people in rural areas, and Black, Latino, and Indigenous communities.

This is what we’ve been fighting for, but we have a lot of work ahead of us. The Biden-Harris admin has the opportunity to expand & improve Title X to make sexual & reproductive health care access a reality for people across the nation. We’re ready to get to work! #RightfullyOurs
