Petition to stop transgender weightlighter from competing in Olympics garners over 25k signatures

A petition calling to stop Laurel Hubbard, a transgender athlete born male in the women’s division in the Olympics has garnered over 25k signatures.

The petition writes “Male-born athletes who identify as women are taking women’s places on sports teams, breaking women’s sporting records and insisting they must share changing and showering facilities with women. This is unfair to women due to the incontrovertible physical advantage that transwomen have. It will also prevent some women from taking part in organised sport at all due to religious and cultural reasons.”

The author also writes “When I started this petition over two years ago I did not really believe the International Olympic Committee would allow male-born athletes to compete against women. But they have. In the last two years quite a few women’s world records have been broken, all by middle-aged men with no out-standing sporting ability within their sex-class. Now they can and will take the place of women on the Olympic podium, take that gold medal home, set new records that no woman will ever be able to break. It effectively marks the end of women’s competitive sport. “
