Olympic Committee issues statement supporting U.S. athletes demonstrating for social justice

The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee announced Thursday they will support for U.S. athletes demonstrating for racial and social justice.

USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland said in a statement “First and foremost, it is critical to state unequivocally that human rights are not political.”

She added “peaceful calls for equity and equality must not be confused with divisive demonstrations.”

Ahead of the Tokyo Olympic games, the guidelines that were previous set stated “no kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas.”
