A new bill by Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-PA) would restrict the role of Speaker of the House to House members.
This comes after former President Trump reacted to a suggestion that he become speaker by calling the idea “so interesting.”
Boyle said in a statement “The Speaker of the U.S. House is second in the United States presidential line of succession. That Donald Trump’s name would even be tossed around as a potential speaker in the people’s house, should serve as an alarm bell that our current requirements need to be amended in the name of protecting our nation and our democracy.”
Last month, Trump responded to Wayne Allen Root’s idea of him becoming speaker.
“That’s so interesting,” Trump said, adding it’s been suggested he run for Senate. “But you know what, your idea might be better. It’s very interesting.”
However, Trump spokesperson Jason Miller later said that Trump has “zero desire to be Speaker.”
