In a recent letter, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin refuted the House Ways and Means Committee’s request for President Trump’s tax return information, writing “I have determined that the Committee’s request lacks a legitimate legislative purpose.”
Mnuchin determined that the Treasure Department is “not authorized to disclose the requested returns and return information.”

The move comes as House Democrats continuously seek the release of President Trump’s tax returns, vowing to battle Republicans and Trump’s counsel over the issue.
Since Trump’s vindication following the recently-submitted Mueller report, Democrats have sought to use his tax information as a potential means to damage his momentum heading into the 2020 presidential election.
