Man arrested for attempted kidnap and sexual assault in retaliation for anti-asian hate crimes

Michael Sangbong Rhee, 37, of Lake Forest in Orange County is accused of attempting to kidnap and sexually assault a woman he thought was white in response to anti-Asian crimes.

Rhee was armed with a handgun and demanded his victim get in the back of a vehicle according to police.

After the victim offered her wallet, Rhee said they would “do that later” and sexually assaulted her. The victim was able to get the attention of a nearby maintenance worker causing Rhee to flee.

Rhee was tracked down to his home in Lake Forest and arrested. Police believe Rhee targeted the woman because he thought she was white and in retaliation for hate crimes against Asian Americans.

Now Rhee may be the one likely to face hate crimes himself.
