Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot placed blame directly on President Trump for the foiled alleged plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
Lightfoot said “I think all roads lead back to Donald Trump.”
She continued “unfortunately, every single time he attacks a public official, and I know this personally, there are those who take that as license to come after us.”
Lightfoot also accused Trump of specifically targeting women and minorities in his attacks, claiming “he seems to have a particular obsession with female and particularly mayors of color.”
Governor Gretchen Whitmer is white.
Lightfoot also said “there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t get some kind of harassment. There is a real cause and effect when the President names me in a disparaging way, which is usually what he does, and people feeling like they have license to make what I regard as real threats.”
Meanwhile, Whitmer herself is calling for a stronger stance against extremism targeted at state officials and has also put blame on Trump’s rhetoric.
