Kaepernick causes stir after releasing new book calling for “a future without policing”

Tuesday, Colin Kapernick tweeted “Today, I’m excited to share that we at @KaepernickPub will be releasing our first title, ABOLITION FOR THE PEOPLE: THE MOVEMENT FOR A FUTURE WITHOUT POLICING & PRISONS, on 10/12/21. This anthology builds on decades of organizing and writing against policing & prisons…”

…& features the work of over 30 contributors plus a reader’s guide, infographics, & cover art by Emory Douglas. I’m proud to have edited this collection & hope it adds to the chorus of voices calling for a world without & beyond policing & prisons. #AbolitionForThePeople

The book, which is called “Abolition for the People: The Movement for a Future Without Policing & Prisons” is a collection of 30 essays that Kaepernick edited himself.

Reaction to Kaepernick’s announcement was mixed but most tweets replying were negative.

One Twitter user replied “you ever seen the movie the Purge…..thats what you are asking for.”

Another wrote “Abolish the police and prisons? Are you kidding me??? REFORM. MAJOR REFORM. But abolition is quite nonsense. Prisons should be teaching/relearning facilities and should not mean a possible death. prisons are necessary to keep actually dangerous ppl from the public”

“Wow. You lost me bro. I’m a for police reform and shutting down private prisons, but “no prions” and “abolish the police” is taking slogans too far…”
