Police were serving a drug warrant to Maurice Hill when they said he began shooting at them with an AR-15-style rifle, injuring six officers and eventually surrendering seven hours later.
Now, Hill has been charged with attempted murder.
Multiple news reports indicated that 36-year-old Maurice Hill, a multiple-time offender legally prohibited from owning a firearm, would face multiple counts of attempted murder as well as drug, gun, and assault charges.
Four other co-defendants were also brought up on lesser charges related to the shootout, according to CBS 3 Philly. No deaths were reported during the battle, which according to bystanders resulted in “hundreds” of gunshots fired in the city’s Nicetown district.
“There will be a lot of charges. These are more than enough charges so that Mr. Maurice Hill may never exit jail,” Philadelphia’s District Attorney Larry Krasner said, according to CBS.
Krasner was reportedly involved in Hill’s surrender to police on Wednesday, which occurred after an hours-long gun battle with police.
ABC News reported that Hill called his lawyer during the shooting, who contacted the district attorney. Krasner then patched in police officials, who negotiated the surrender.
Hill was reportedly denied bail despite arguing at his hearing that he was not an “immediate danger” to the community.
