Disney/Pixar’s “Lightyear” fizzled at the box office with a disappointing weekend.
North American opened to an estimated $51 million box office.
This fell way below industry expectations of $70 million.
Worldwide, box office was $85.6 million according to Disney.
Pallotta writes “The opening is a disappointing launch for Pixar — one of the most successful and popular studios in all of Hollywood. The animation studio — which has produced hits including “Toy Story,” “The Incredibles” and “Finding Nemo” — has made $14.7 billion at the global box office.”
Lead Actor Chris Evans, who voices Buzz Lightyear in the Disney movie “Lightyear” called critics of the gay kiss scene “idiots” who will “die off like dinosaurs.”
Variety reported in March that Pixar restored the gay kiss in “Lightyear” after uproar from staffers over the decision to remove it.
Now several regions have banned the film over the kiss including Saudia Arabia, Kuwait, and the UAB.
“The real truth is those people are idiots,” Evans said of critics of the on screen gay kiss.
“Every time there’s been social advancement as we wake up, the American story, the human story is one of constant social awakening and growth and that’s what makes us good,” Evans continued. “There’s always going to be people who are afraid and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before. But those people die off like dinosaurs. I think the goal is to pay them no mind, march forward and embrace the growth that makes us human.”
