Dems fume over report Barr suggested charging violent protesters with Sedition

Several Democrats and critics of President Trump expressed dismay at reporting indicating that AG Barr told prosecutors to consider charging violent protesters with sedition.

Responding to a Wall Street Journal report, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow accused Attorney General William Barr of having “gone off the deep end,” She added “This is nuts.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, to bring a sedition case, prosecutors would have to prove there was a conspiracy to attack government agents or officials that posed an imminent danger.

Harvard professor Laurence Tribe was also dismayed by the report, writing “Sedition charges require proof of efforts to overthrow the United States Government. Talking in these terms based on what’s happening is grotesquely irresponsible.”

He added “It’s way beyond monarchical. It’s paranoid and dictatorial. Opus Dei, anyone?”

Former FBI Agent Peter Strzok shared a historic image of a “Rabble Rouser Index” and wrote “Charging violent protest as sedition? When I was a young agent in Boston, a senior agent kept a copy of this form from the 60s as a reminder of the ever-present temptation to sacrifice the first amendment to stifle dissent.”

“It remains powerful today,” he added.

Mayor Jenny Durkan wrote “This report is chilling and the latest abuse of power from the Trump administration. This is not a story about me. It’s about the how this President and his Attorney General are willing to subvert the law and use the DOJ for political purposes.”
