WATCH: CNN’s Santiago Refers to Mt. Rushmore as “a monument of two slave owners”

Friday, while covering President Trump’s Mount Rushmore event, CNN correspondent Leyla Santiago referred to the historic monument as “a monument of two slave owners and on land wrestled away from Native Americans.”

Leyla Santiago:

“Kicking off the Independence Day weekend, President Trump will be at Mt. Rushmore where he’ll be standing in front of a monument of two slave owners and on land wrestled away from Native Americans. We were told he would be focusing on the effort to, quote, ‘tear down our country’s history.’”

Glenn Greenwald noticed how differently CNN covered Mount Rushmore just 4 years ago, tweeting:

Pursuant to the new moral stricture promulgated this week by the NYT & CNN — that Mount Rushmore is a shameful monument to racism and white supremacy — both CNN and Bernie Sanders ought to repent for this praise they jointly heaped on it in 2016:

In the clip shared by Greenwald, A CNN reporter talks of the “majesty of the moment,” then calls Mount Rushmore a “monument to four great American presidents.”

Bernie Sanders says “Just the accomplishment and the beauty — it really does make one very proud to be an American.”

Phillip Wegmann wrote:

What changed? Sanders said Mt. Rushmore made him proud to be an American in 2016, and CNN seemed to agree. Now people want to blast the presidents off the mountain.

Zach Parkinson tweeted:

Fascinating how CNN called Mount Rushmore “majestic” and “quite a sight” in 2008 when Obama visited, but now its a symbol of slavery and stolen land
