Buttigieg mocked for his claim “there is racism physically built into some of our highways”

During a recent interview with April Ryan for the Grio, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said “there is racism physically built into some of our highways.”

“There is racism physically built into some of our highways,” Buttigieg claimed “and that’s why the jobs plan has specifically committed to reconnect some of the communities that were divided by these dollars,” Buttigieg told April Ryan.

“Well, if you’re in Washington, I’m told that the history of that highway is one that was built at the expense of communities of color in the D.C. area,” he continued “There are stories, and I think Philadelphia and Pittsburgh [and] in New York, Robert Moses famously saw through the construction of a lot of highways.”

Some reactions on Facebook:

“Oh my good Lord. Do these folks look at everything through racist eyes. It is destructive and tears this country apart to do this. Most people are not racist!!!!!”

“Pete I think you have just crossed over from democratic rhetoric to insane nonsense. Racism is built into highways. What are you just letting the words fall out of your mouth as long as racism is included. Pretty soon people aren’t even going to listen to a word uttered by you so called politicians. It just is not worth listening to”

“Stop with the racism crap. We are all God’s children, we all bleed red blood. It doesn’t matter what color we are, there are good people and bad people. We all know some of each. Stop it now!”

Here are some of the reactions on Twitter:

“My head is spinning”

Tricia Flanagan tweeted:

“Pete Buttigieg now says our American highways are racist. If we don’t push back against this Biden lunacy now, we’re done.”

“This might be the absolute, most stupid thing I have ever heard in my 38 years of life on this very planet of Earth.”

“Highways are racist now?”

“‘So, racism is infrastructure?’ Pete Buttigieg explains what’s ‘physically built into’ U.S. highways”
