At 4:43 p.m. on Friday, July 3, Braintree Police and numerous mutual aid partners responded to the South Shore Plaza on Granite Street after a shooting took place following an altercation between two groups in the mall.
This was not an active shooter situation, but an act of violence between two groups.
During the incident, a 15-year-old female bystander was shot and suffered what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. She was transported to an area hospital by ambulance Friday.
After placing the mall temporarily on lock-down and asking those in the surrounding neighborhoods to shelter-in-place, police quickly located RODRIGUEZ and a second male suspect on Granite Street near the mall. Both men were placed in police custody at that time. A gun was also located by police in bushes outside the plaza.
The lock-down and shelter-in-place were both lifted Friday night and the South Shore Plaza Mall will reopen this morning at its normal time.
The Braintree Police Department also extends its gratitude to the numerous mutual aid agencies who responded and assisted in the response to last night’s incident.
These are allegations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
