BREAKING: NYC to start painting BLM mural in front of Trump Tower Tomorrow

The BLM mural authorized by Mayor Bill de Blasio on Fifth Avenue will begin tomorrow.

July 1st, President Trump made his opposition to the project clear, writing:

NYC is cutting Police $’s by ONE BILLION DOLLARS, and yet the @NYCMayor is going to paint a big, expensive, yellow Black Lives Matter sign on Fifth Avenue, denigrating this luxury Avenue. This will further antagonize New York’s Finest, who LOVE New York & vividly remember the….

….horrible BLM chant, “Pigs In A Blanket, Fry ‘Em Like Bacon”. Maybe our GREAT Police, who have been neutralized and scorned by a mayor who hates & disrespects them, won’t let this symbol of hate be affixed to New York’s greatest street. Spend this money fighting crime instead!

NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio replied:

Here’s what you don’t understand: Black people BUILT 5th Ave and so much of this nation. Your “luxury” came from THEIR labor, for which they have never been justly compensated. We are honoring them. The fact that you see it as denigrating your street is the definition of racism.
You also don’t know that NY’s Finest are now a majority people of color. They already know Black Lives Matter. There is no “symbol of hate” here. Just a commitment to truth. Only in your mind could an affirmation of people’s value be a scary thing.

TheHill reports New York City is moving ahead with its plans to have a mural of the words “Black Lives Matter” painted on the street in front of Trump Tower this week, despite pushback from the president earlier this month, NBC New York reports.

Citing city sources, the local station reports that the painting for the mural will begin on early Thursday. The project, which aims to see a section of Fifth Avenue in front of Trump Tower painted with the words “Black Lives Matter,” is expected to take several days.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D), a vocal critic of Trump who first announced plans for the project back in late June, is also reportedly expected to participate in the effort later on Thursday.

Though the mural will be far from the first honoring the Black Lives Matter movement to go up in New York, this effort in particular drew the ire of Trump not long after it was announced late last month.

In a pair of tweets knocking the planned project about a week back, Trump lashed out at the mayor for “denigrating” what he called a “luxury avenue” with the words and took aim at city officials over plans to cut $1 billion from the local police department’s budget.

He also referred to the “Black Lives Matter” mural as a “symbol of hate,” even as the namesake organization behind the popular movement has worked continuously to combat police brutality and racism over the years to stop the police killings of black Americans.

In a tweet firing back at Trump at the time, De Blasio told Trump “the fact that you see it as denigrating your street is the definition of racism.”

“Here’s what you don’t understand: Black people BUILT 5th Ave and so much of this nation. Your ‘luxury’ came from THEIR labor, for which they have never been justly compensated. We are honoring them,” he also said.
