Controversial athlete-turned-activist Colin Kaepernick further incited social media on Thursday, by posting an incendiary quote from an 1865 speech titled “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” by abolitionist Frederick Douglass.
Despite the fact that Douglass, a former slave, was actually a noted Republican and a proud American, Kaepernick’s quote was framed in such a way that condemned America, prompting an outraged response on social media.
“What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence? This Fourth of July is yours, not mine…There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of these United States at this very hour.”

Americans of all races, genders, and backgrounds took to social media to condemn Kaepernick for his continued criticism of the USA, with several commenters suggesting he was “free to leave” any time he liked.
You know you can always leave & live in Africa but we know you will not leave your cushy privileged American life where black people have better lives & opportunities than any other place on this planet.
You are shill hired to keep black pple shackled & enslaved to the past pic.twitter.com/zkcKOxONCD

This is 2019 brother. We are trying to move forward. This rhetoric and ideology that you continue to spew does NOTHING to advance the cause. Yes, there were people that sought to hold black people back, but many more to advance the cause. Stop the division. We are ALL Americans!

Pretty cool that you live in a country where you’re both entitled to the earnings of your own work and also allowed to criticize your government without fear of legal punishment

Well 620,000 Americans died for equal Freedoms in his day, including 40,000 African Americans. Problem is, the Democratic Party didn’t accept the outcome & became the Party of the KKK, Jim Crow and Segregation. They weren’t for Civil Rights in the 60’s either. Tell me I’m wrong

Colin Kaepernick: Hates the celebration of America’s founding.
Also Colin Kaepernick: Makes money through stable free market enterprise by marketing “his rights.” 🤔
