In a new interview with Politico, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley is sharply critical of Trump, saying “we need to acknowledge he let us down.”
“We need to acknowledge he let us down,” Haley, says. “He went down a path he shouldn’t have, and we shouldn’t have followed him, and we shouldn’t have listened to him. And we can’t let that ever happen again.”
Haley specifically blasted former President Trump for his remarks about former Vice President Pence.
“When I tell you I’m angry, it’s an understatement,” Haley said. “I am so disappointed in the fact that [despite] the loyalty and friendship he had with Mike Pence, that he would do that to him. Like, I’m disgusted by it.”
Haley added “He’s got a big bully pulpit. He should be responsible with it.”
Haley admitted Trump still has a big following of supporters.
She said “I know how much people love Donald Trump. I know it. I feel it. Whether it’s an RNC room or social media or talking to donors, I can tell you that the love they have for him is still very strong. That’s not going to just fall to the wayside.”
“Nor do I think the Republican Party is going to go back to the way it was before Donald Trump. I don’t think it should,” Haley continued.
“What we need to do is take the good that he built, leave the bad that he did, and get back to a place where we can be a good, valuable, effective party. But at the same time, it’s bigger than the party,” she suggested.
She added “I hope our country can come together and figure out how we pull this back.”
