President Trump and HUD Secretary Ben Carson are set to implement a new rule which would bar illegal immigrants from accessing public housing, a move many have called long overdue.
“Thanks to [President Trump’s] leadership, we are putting America’s most vulnerable first,” said Dr. Carson, pointing out that “hundreds of thousands” of US-born citizens are often left “waiting for many years on waitlists to get housing assistance.”
Although it is currently illegal for undocumented migrants to use public assistance, abuse of the system has been widely reported, leading to the new measures.

Now, HUD’s “Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements” program is set to screen households receiving government aide, making it more difficult for illegal aliens to abuse the system.
According to HUD estimates, tens of thousands of non-citizen headed households are believed to currently be receiving housing assistance.
