Biden spox gives statement on video of Biden calling U.S. troops “stupid bastards” and “a dull bunch,” says he was joking

According to Biden spokesperson Andrew Bates, Joe Biden was just joking in the viral resurfaced video from 2016 where he calls U.S. troops in apparent jest “stupid bastards” and “a dull bunch.”

In the video, Biden says “I want you to know notwithstanding what you may hear about me, I have incredibly good judgment. One, I married Jill and two, I appointed Johnson to the academy. I just want you to know that.”

He continues “so clap for that you stupid bastards,” as the crowd laughs. “Man, you all are a dull bunch. It must be slow here, man, I don’t know,” Biden adds.

Andrew Bates, Biden campaign spokesperson responded to the video that resurfaced Friday in a statement to the Daily Beast.

Bates said “Vice President Biden was jokingly encouraging the audience to clap for an airwoman on the stage, and a number of service members can be seen laughing and smiling at the comment. Seconds before, he praised them for ‘the incredible sacrifices [they] make for our country.”

Bates added “He thanked them for their patriotism and courage throughout, and closed his remarks by saying, ‘you’re the finest generation of warriors the world has ever, ever known’—receiving an enthusiastic ovation.”
