Per Newser, in March, a gaggle of 2020 presidential hopefuls descended on the South by Southwest festival in Austin over the weekend—but the political figure everybody wanted to see was Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The 29-year-old freshman lawmaker spoke to a massive ballroom that was “full to the brim” and she could have filled an even bigger venue, NBC reports.
NYPost reports US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez raked in more money for her reelection campaign in the last fundraising quarter than any other House Democrat — including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, records show.
AOC, a Democratic socialist who reps parts of the Bronx and Queens, raised $1.42 million between July 1 through Sept. 30, followed by House impeachment czar and US Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), who netted $1.26 million, and House Speaker Pelosi (D-Calif.), who received $1.145 million.
The lion’s share of AOC’s donations, $1.1 million, were under $200.
Political observers told The Post it is unprecedented for a rookie representative in office for less than a year to out-raise powerful veteran leaders such as Pelosi and Schiff.
All three pols are up for reelection in 2020, with Ocasio-Cortez preparing for a Democratic primary in June from, among others, Bronx Councilman Fernando Cabrera.
“This is very rare, unique — I can’t recall anyone raising this much money during the first year in office,” political consultant George Arzt said.
“AOC is a celebrity who gained attention from people across the country, and many on the left support her.”
He called it a testament to her popularity and tremendous name recognition, saying, “She’s become iconic.”
