AOC co-introduces bill exploring Puerto Rico statehood

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is teaming up with Democrats in introducing a bill that would explore Puerto Rico’s future status as well as the possibility of statehood.

Per NBC News “The measure, the Puerto Rico Self-Determination Act of 2021, calls for creating a “status convention” made up of delegates elected by Puerto Rican voters. The delegates would be responsible for coming up with long-term solutions for the island’s territorial status — statehood, independence, a free association or other options beyond its current territorial arrangement.”

NJ Democrat Bob Menendez introduced the measure in the Senate and said options would be “put before the people of Puerto Rico to vote in a federally recognized referendum for the first time.”

AOC said “If we want to consider ourselves a democracy and live up to our values, it is fundamentally incompatible for an open democracy to have subjects.”

“A colony is incompatible with democracy, it’s incompatible with full citizenship, and we should all be able to enjoy the right to vote for our leaders,” the NY Democrat also said. “We should all be able to enjoy the right to equal treatment, and self-determination is how we can accomplish that in a process that is respected by all.”
