AOC backs expanding the Supreme Court, argues current structure doesn’t “benefit us”

Thursday, Rep. AOC said she supports expanding the Supreme Court, arguing the current structure doesn’t “benefit us.”

“I do think we should be expanding the court,” AOC told reporters.

“The idea that nine people, that a nine-person court, can overturn laws that … hundreds and thousands of legislators, advocacy and policymakers drew consensus on … we have to … just ask ourselves, I think as a country, how much does that current structure benefit us? And I don’t think it does,” she added.

AOC was a major supporter of Senator Edward Markey, one of the key Democrats spearheading the Supreme Court expansion bill and was instrumental in helping Markey fend off a challenge from Joe Kennedy.

“The United States Supreme Court is broken. It is out of balance and it needs to be fixed,” Markey said when he introduced the plan to expand the court. “Too many Americans have lost faith in the court as a neutral arbiter.”
